Furthermore reactive oxygen species (ROS) are known to act as potent Redox signalling molecules within a cell. SOD selectively degrades overshooting superoxide anions (O2-) and thereby prevents its devastating chain reactions which can range from local cell and tissue damages to systemic multi organ failure. Unlike conventionally used antioxidants as vitamin A, C or E, SOD in contrast is not depleted in the reaction due to its enzymatic nature but instead neutralises O2- constantly. SOD is known as nature's most potent antioxidant, hence even very low doses can show a great effect. Whereas other forms of the enzyme which are derived from fruit extracts our genetically engineered and produced human SOD is well tolerated by the immune system causing no side effects.
